A capital call occurs when a private fund requests a portion of the capital you’ve committed, like 10% of a $100,000 commitment. Typically, over three years, the fund will call all the committed capital as it finds new investments.<\/p>\n
I’ve been an assertive investor since 1999, usually keeping minimal cash in my checking account. Most of my funds are invested in an S&P 500 ETF and private real estate funds.<\/p>\n
However, when Treasury bond yields hit over 5%, I moved my remaining cash into Treasuries, reducing my checking account to less than a month’s living expenses. Trouble struck when I received a $20,000 capital call from a venture capital fund. Private funds typically use a 60-90-day bank credit line to fund deals before calling on limited partners’ commitments. This bridge loan is repaid once the partners’ funds are collected. However, in cases like bank runs, these loans might cease, making it crucial for limited partners to be prompt and prepared for capital calls.<\/p>\n
